18.05.10 | Thompson to Motegi
Teenage single-seater star Gary Thompson heads to rounds three and four in the Japanese Formula 3 series this weekend brim full of confidence after a strong pre-season test session at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit.
Having taken part in qualifying at the first event in Suzuka last month without any prior dry weather knowledge of the track, Thompson is looking forward to racing at a circuit this weekend with which he is already familiar.
The Dubliner scored two seventh place finishes on his F3 debut weekend with his Achievement by KCMG squad at the Japanese GP venue despite his lack of pre-event running and is looking forward to a more relaxed approach to this weekend when he hopes he can challenge for podium positions.
"With only fifteen minute qualifying sessions it's really important that your preparation is perfect," says Thompson, the reigning Formula BMW Pacific Rookie Cup Champion. "With relatively little dry running available at several circuits before the start of the season it's definitely geared towards the drivers with a year or more experience in the series.
"Having said that, I was really encouraged by the way we as a team were able to cope with the learning curve in Suzuka and I believe that if we get a clean weekend we can challenge for podiums.
"We had a good pre season test at Motegi where I was able to run consistently fast times competitive with the front runners from last season. Hopefully we can continue in a similar manner this weekend."
The 16-race Japanese F3 series resumes at Twin Ring Motegi circuit with testing on Friday May 21st, qualifying and round three on Saturday 22nd, and round four on Sunday 23rd.
The series concludes at Autopolis on October 17th.
